I found in the 2000 Cabela's catalog a Tanaka 3hp outboard that looks like just the ticket for my H23 on the lake. Has anyone used, seen, have one of these Tanaka outboards? I am somewhat interested in these, but don't want to be the first guy to try one out. William Davis (daviss@vnet.net)

Do you like noise?

William: Do you like lotsa noise. These engines are air cooled and are very loud. Had one on a dink. I got wet when it was hot and siezed up (never to run again). Most of the water cooled o/b engines will last longer than a fiberglass boat if taken care of properly. I do not think that this is money well spent. Check out the newspaper for a used engine if price is your thing.

another opinion

3 horse may be under powering too if your against a blow and chop.........if money isn't such a factor the Honda 5hp 4 stroke is very quiet and reliable

Used can be a good option

I agree with previous posts concerning used motors. I called around to every marina within 100 miles and found a used 7.5 Mercury in mint condition for $275.00 It's a 2 stroke and rope start, but starts on the first pull and will do the job. Good luck on your search
