Tall rig?

Does the tall rig on the Catalina 30 make a significant difference? I'm looking at used boats and wonder how much value to place on the increase in sail area.

If you sail in predominantly light air conditions and don't use a spinnaker it may be beneficial... it has a slightly faster phrf handicap... but as far as value goes.... there's just too many other factors to consider.... you should only pay more if you absolutely want the tall rig.... it sounds like any benefit it may offer is not that important to you.

Joe's right. Also, general consensus is that you need to reef a tad sooner.

I forget, was the bowsprit made standard on the C30 tall rig package? I heard they started adding that when the very first tall rig boats were shown to have lee helm issues.

C30 Tall Rig

The C30 Tall actually has a very large PHRF difference from the C30 Standard rig. In SoCal the std rates 192 and the tall is 168, a difference of 24 sec per mile. That's huge, when compared to a C34 or a C36, for example, which have rating differences of 9 sec per mile between the standard and tall versions. Catalina 30 standard rigs are somewhat notorious for having excessive weather helm. The tall rig has both a small bowsprit for a longer J measurement, and an only slightly longer E measurement on the main. This pushes the center of effort of the sailplan forward, resulting in a better balanced boat, as well as the additional power of more sail area.

Wow...... I was using the C27 as a reference where the diff is only 3, but I looked up the C30 on phrfsocal and you are totally right.... in which case the speed factor could be a price point. In fact it sounds like 2 entirely different boats.

So... to address Jwhy's question then, what's the value difference?

Also, on the phrf list, it shows a Cat30BS rated at 180..... what is the BS model?

The numbers nation-wide are all over the place. If you look at the fleets with the best/fastest numbers (in both cases Lake Ontario), the spread is 9 seconds; 171 vs 162.

What's the reasoning for the bowsrit being slower... less sail area?

Tall Rig, full keel, with Bow Sprit easily sails to its 172 rating in Long Island Sound in winds up to 12 knots, but, figuring 12 kn makes aparent 17 knots speed on a beat, it then becomes overpowered and does not meet its PHRF. The standard rig rating, as I recall is 186 or so. I may be off by a second or two since I am not an active PHRF racer anymore.
On LIS I would not consider a standard rig since the tall rig holds its own 80% of the time during sailing season.

My TM/BS is Lake Ontario PHRF is 198 (with 3 bladed prop). All the Catalina 30's at my club that race are the TM/BS rigs. Standard rig is too slow in the light winds we frequently see in summer sailing on Lake Ontario.
