What's the pros and cons of a tall rig on a 1990 Catalina 36 versus a standard rig?
Is the tall rig tougher to control in heavy air or easier?

The basic answer is that one reefs a tad earlier.
And, no, there is no difference in handling, just reef.

As a complete aside, many of us with boats in that size range have found (like a pretty good consensus, that a 135 or so size jib is more than adequate, and that anything larger, unless you're a die-hard racer in light air, is not a good idea.

Good luck.

Good point on genoa size - I just replaced my 150 (had seen its life) with a 125. Looking forward to pointing higher and easier handling, especially solo.

a second set of reef points in the main can be helpful with a tall rig too. My single set puts my main at about the same size as a standard rig Capri 22. When the wind is blowing enough that you need to reef a standard rig I'm really getting a workout. Sending my main out for a second set is on the to do list, though I'm not sure I'll get to it this year.
