Hi. In the next 18 mths I intend to travel to the US and get a @1984 H34 and sail it home via Mexico by the normal route. There is a number of Hunter 34 travelling the globe. I feel value for money and brand name mean a lot as Hunter has only been in Australia since 1996 and has a good following. Q1. Will this model take an anchor winch and about 100' chain ?(needed in Aus). Q2. Ive read the deck seams leak, is this common, is this a hard fix.? Q3. what if any is the backup system should wheel stearing fail.? Q4. Is there a problem with oil canning in the bow.? That will do for know thanks in advance Simon V

I have a '85 H40 which is the big sister to the 34. 1. Yes and yes. 2. No and yes. 3. YES! You need multiple options. The boat came equipped with an emergency tiller which would be problematic for a long term solution if you had a wheel mounted AP (as most 34's do) and no vane self steering. With an underdeck AP the wheel could be completely disabled and you could still steer nicely. None of those options would help you if you lost your rudder so I would fab up a transom hung rudder with pintles and gudgeons and a substantial tiller that could be removed and stowed. This could also be rigged with lines and blocks to the headsail for rudinmetary self-steering. 4. It can flex some but I don't believe it's a problem. Just my 2 pennies.

No problem
My previous boat was an 1987 H34. Great boat and we had a lot of fun on her. I had a Simpson windlass and 90' of chain. Worked great and only one thing to watch out for. With that much weight forward, I found that the bow dipped down slightly. It never was a problem though, and I could lever her out easily by keeping the aft water tank full.
