I have installed the Yanamar Tach for the 2QM15 engine. As I recall a 24 MM plug has to be removed from the housing for the flywheel on the engine. The Yanmar tach sending unit is then screwed in the whole. I believe the sending unit senses the number of gear teeth passing near a magnetic pickup on the sending head and translates this into RPM. The tach display is mounted on the engine display panel and has a set of leads that plug into the wiring harness that runs to the engine.

Sounds right.

Here's a wiring diagram from the 2QM20/3QM30 manual. It shows the wire colors in the standard harness. Your description of the plug and sender is correct.
