I am thinking of taking the table out of my 26. I would like to place a piece of plywood over the area(level of seats) and make a berth or lounging area. It would not be the full length of the seats just maybe up to the end of the centerboard casing. What do you all think. My wife and I don't like the berth under the cockpit and the v berth is difficult to get in and out of. And I think that the table takes up too much room. We can get a small table to eat on or use the cockpit one.

Combine Suggestions

Two ideas have been presented in the forum in the past that might be combined to achieve what you want. The first is to cut about 12-18 inches off the table, thus providing more room in the cabin and still allowing you to sit and eat at it. You will no longer be able to swing the table to extend the V-berth, but you're not using that anyway. The second is to drill a hole in the compression post (Being very careful NOT to hit the rope for raising the swing keel) towards the ceiling. Then, when bedtime rolls around, RAISE the table up to the ceiling, inserting a pin in the hole you drilled to keep the table up. Set your plywood platform for you berth/lounging area, and you're all set. Now, I haven't tried EITHER of this mods, but both have been discussed here, and others might be able to provide insights and/or pictures. Good luck. T J

Our table is

I drilled the hole and keep the table up. This past season it was there all the time except for one night we had dinner with friends inside. Don't forget that the next owner might want to use the table sometimes. "UP" seems like a great compromise. Jim Grizzly Bear

Table up works great ¡

Imade it last season , and it is up 80% of the time. it will let you do all your other proyects, whitout altering your boat too much.

how to?

How big a hole do you all drill? Where do you drill it(from the top) and What works best as a bolt to hold it up. Can you leave it up as you sail?

John; There is no perfect boat for anyone. I Have often discussed the table issue with alot of folks. IF you plan to remove the table, the easiest way of course to cut it off. When you replace it, you will have to remove the mast step, compression post and so forthe from inside the boat to put a new table in. Do not forget the cost. In addition, you have to remove the fiberglass piece in order to put any boards down. The down side to this is when you sell the boat with out the table which also extends the V Berth. If you do raise it, drill a hole the size of the retaining pin only and make damn sure there is some way that you are able to secure the pin as I have heard of someone being injured when it fell. Table Up !

I drilled a hole Just the same diameter the one holding the table in the down position.I could use the same pin,but insteed i made another one aout of s.s.solid tubing ,whith help from a mechanic shop. the reason I whent to that trouble ,is that you convert real quik. It´s quit safe since the weight of the table does not let go the pin ,or if you prefer you could drill a small hole trough the pin and have a secutity line to the compresion post. In order to mark where the hole is to be drilled, just lift the table to the top .try it first and check out the open feeling. and, yes ,i´ve done a lot of sailing whith the table up. Hope this helps.
