Switching from 130 to a 150 jib

Last year I purchased a Doyle 150 jib to replace my 130 roller furling jib.I also added 2 ft. of track. I don't seem to be getting the performance out of the 150 that I think I should be getting. I have been playing with the car position and can't seem to find the right combination of car position for light to moderate winds.In heavy winds when I reef back to the 130 and set the car at the end of the old track, I seem to get good performance. I have tried keeping my sheets in line with the line marking near the clew and I have ignored it. I can't quite find the right formula to set it right. What did you use as a UV protector. If it was Sunbrella, the Sunberlla is pretty heavy for a leach on a 150 in light wind. You may want to consider a sacrificial piece of sail material ( replace it every few years)or go for the added cost of a UV dacron. The Sunbrella was probably $5.50 / foot to have installed and the UV dacron is lighter but will probably put another $1.00 / foot on to the price of the UV guard. I would call Tom Bell (Bell Sails , a local loft) in Washington, PA. for a good figure. 724-222-3380 He may have some other advice. waiting out the freezer.w.landau

Put a sock on it ?

Marks idea is good but for a 150 you might want to leave all uv protection off the sail and cover it with a separate sock when you are not using it. Unless you are working down wind the shape of the sail is far more important than the area. A 150 needs to be as light as possible to have a good shape. If you are working upwind it might be better to roll it in to 130 size and save the full 150 size for poled out downwind cruising.

150% vs 130%

Hi Mark, Thanks for joining the Doyle Sails Forum.Without actually seeing the sail set, I can't comment on it's shape. But, I don't think Suncover is your problem. Although UV Dacron is lighter than sunbrella, it shouldn't effect sail set except in very light wind.One of the things most sailors overlook, is the interaction of genoas with the main. If your main is older, and the draft of the main has moved aft, the interaction of the larger Genoa with the old main can greatly effect the flow of air.A Genoa and Mainsail work as one when going upwind, so this interaction of the sails is important. Going from a 130% to a 150% may change how the boat sails by actually closing up the slot between the two sails.If you can get your local sailmaker out sailing for an hour or so, he should be able to evaluate your sails and the boats performance. Keep in mind, that there may be a charge for his time.

By the way, If Bell Sails is the closest loft, he can certainly give you some good advice. I have personally worked with Tom Bell when he was in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He is a good sailmaker and reputable.
