Hi,, As a newcomer to the Catalina C22 world, I have been going over, and repairing as I go, projects that need attention. I notice that the swing down keel has a lot of lower edge corrosion. As the boat is on a trailer, I presume that the upper edge is also in need of repair. My question is: what is the best repair material to use and is there a "poor-man's" way of lifting the boat from the trailer so I can lower the keel?

drums

get yourself two 55 gal drums, either two pieces of foam (dock foam) or a 2x8 and a boogie board. let the trailer jack all the way down place the drums under the transom and the foam (or 2x8 with boogie board)on the drums. Raise the jack, boat will come off the trailer. If you want it all the way off you'll need a 4x12 and some concrete blocks. Raise the jack as high as it will go (you may have to bock the trailer and raise it again) put the board across (at the front of the bunks) the blocks let the jack down and remove the trailer. To put it back on the trailer reverse the procedure. Let the keel down to a board to relieve the hull stress.

Block it up . . .

If you just wanted to gain a small amount of clearance to lower the keel for inspection and some work, you could block the boat up on the bunks with some 2x6 blocks. I usually raised my boat on the trailer by using 2-3 layers of blocks. You need to be careful where you lift your boat or you will damage the hull. Find a really strong area (bulkhead location) and use a lifting pad to spread out the load.
