I have a question in relation t the swing keel's winch. We bought a Catalina 22 MK II recently, in perfect condition, but the swing keel winch has a problem. It will pull the keel up but it will not stay or stop at any point, so to keep the keel up we need to tie the winch with a rope. So we keep the boat in the water with the keel down for the time being... What spare part am I missing? Do you know where can I buy such a part from the INternet (not much of Catalina spare parts in South America...). Thanks for your good advice.

I have just replaced the Catalina 22 winch on my 1979 boat - The winch is a special version of the Fulton 1000 pound rated winch. It is a "Braking" design that has no reverse switch (like many trailer winches use) - But instead depends on a friction clutch to allow reverse pulling action. These winches must be special ordered by dealers from the Fulton company in a bulk order. I got mine from the local Catalina dealer in Rockledge, FL - Cost about $110. Other standard trailer winches of like capacity go for about $40 - but do not offer the same "braking" action and will not work on your boat. Sometimes lubricants on the gears of the winch get onto the braking friction disc (a bad thing) - and cause the winch to malfunction (somewhat like you describe) - The lube is needed on the gears - but not on the friction discs - A good cleaning of this area might bring your unit back to proper function. Here's a web site with Fulton winches- http://www.nextag.com/Home-Garden--zzfulton+winch+k1550z2700400zB6z5---html I hope this helps - L. P. Scott

Keel Winch

Not long ago I contacted Fulton about replacement parts for my winch, a bit out of luck for some parts (winch no longer sold mines old K1000) I was told. But they did send me a list of the parts. Some are still in stock. I was lucky enough to receive a phone call from one of the techs about the winch. When we were about to end our conversation he informed me that Northern Tools sells the exact winch used in our boats for about $65.00. After checking around this is about $55.00 cheaper than anywhere else. Since you have a newer boat you should have a new winch, therefore be able to buy any parts you need.

Question on Fulton Winch

I also need a new winch and I was going to get the replacment through Cataina Direct who is asking $129. It would be great to get it at half price! I was looking at Northern Tools, Fulton Brake Winch — 1000-Lb. Capacity Item# 12968. The handle looks like it may be too long from the picture (compared to the picture in Catalina Direct). Can you confirm that this is the correct winch, and will fit without any modifications? Thank you so much!!!! Dave

confirmation

Dave, I can only tell you that the tech at Fulton (Cequent Trailer Products) told me they do NOT have versions of the same model winch and the winch NT sells is the exact winch anyone would sell. I went so far as to ask him if there was a possibility they were selling maybe seconds? He assured me that they do NOT make any inferior winches that could be sold at a cut rate price. The winch was the same winch anyone else was selling right down to the zinc coating. But you are free to call them yourself. The contact # I used was: Pam Busko Inside Sales Coordinator Cequent Trailer Products 1050 IndianHead Drive Mosinee WI 54455 phone 715-693-9273

Thanks Ken

Thanks Ken, I think I will go ahead and order it, worst is that I would have to pay to ship it back or see if the original handle will fit. I still have plenty of time before sailing season starts up here in New England. I will let everyone know when it arrives! dc

Handle may be too long

I did some more research and saw where the winch from NT had a handle that was 11 inches long. I measured my existing one and it was only 7. I don't think there was that much space available. I think I will just wait and order the one from Catalina Direct to be sure it is correct, fits and all that. Thanks dc

Catalina 22 Replacement Winch

Last year, I replaced my old winch with a Dutton-Laison winch from Central Tractor Supply. It is a 800 lb brake winch, that specifically states on the box and in the literature that it can be used for sailboat keels. The winch was less than $55.00 and has a brown powder-coated finish. I did need to drill a center hole on one side to match the Catalina 22 mounting bolts, and I had to bend the handle, but otherwise is has worked great. I feel that the $50+ I have saved in buying one from CD is worth to few minutes it took me to modify the Dutton-Laison winch.
