Swing keel winch failure.

I launched my C22 today and when it came off of the trailer the keel swung down with the keel crank spinning wildly. After motoring into deeper water and docking the boat (I have a slip for the boat now), I attempted to crank up the keel. It seems to want to crank up ok BUT it doesn't self-lock anymore (it just spins when I let go of the handle). My question is, can I repair or replace the winch without hauling the boat? If so, is it difficult? I'm pretty well mechanically inclined. If anyone has done this please let me know. Thanks! Keith K. S/V Vesta #6348

winches

Keith; The winch pawls have failed. Check to make sure the little pawl lever is still there, it may have rusted and fallen off. Remove the cable, tie it off, unbolt the winch and take it to a trailer supply place to match it up. They're not that expensive. Bolt up the new one, attach the cable, away you go.

had the same thing happen

keith I launched monday same thing happened and i put it back in the slip opened up the winch housing and the little winch catch over the winter had stuck in the open position. I lubed it and worked it back and forth and it now works fine . a little wd-40 or other lube will work fine jim

Found the issue...

The catch didn't work because the spring broke in half. I've seen repair kits online but I don't know which model of Fulton winch it is. Anyone happen to have that model # handy? Keith
