I have a 78 venture 25. Looked it up on sailboatdata.com and it listed the swing keel weight as 800 lbs. Same website listed the MacGregor 25 swing keel weight as 600lbs. Was there a change or is it just an error. I want to remove the keel for some repair work and 600 is a lot easier to deal with than 800.

I'll be darned, it does say 800#.

My Mac25 is "only" 625#, but I'd be hard pressed to lift it off my foot. You'll likely need a strong jack or three, and smart handling techniques. The weight difference is negligible.

I recently pulled mine off the boat.

625 or 800, either can mess you up pretty good, if mishandled.

I thought they had 3 different weights. Weren't there 3 different keel designs for the 25?
(I am going from memory of about 4-5 years ago when I had considered a 25.)

I think ive read everything available on the mac 25 and ive never heard of any design changes from the original 625lb weight..... i would say its a misprint or someones misinformation... AND, sailboatdata didnt used to have it listed as 800lbs, because I have in my hand a printout from sailboatdata when I bought my 25, and it shows 625... someone changed it!

I know the guy who runs sailboatdata.... its a great resource but he has no better source of that data then you or I. Or it could just be a typo.

I'm in justsomeguy's camp. No matter what it is, don't drop it on your foot. :)

If 625 is a lot easier for you to handle than 800 then you're more man than I am. Either one of those weights would require use of lifting equipment for me, and at that point I don't really care if it's 400 or 1000 because the tools will be doing all the work.

There may be differences

I have a 1976 model 25 and Justsomeguy has an 198X boat. His cabin is wider than mine (although I have footing to walk - carefully - around the cabin rather than having to go over the top) and his keel is shaped differently than mine. I have been on his boat. It is different. Not sure of the keel weight though - but it sure looked heavier.

According to this 1983 dated factory print, the keel is 600 pounds. Short of calling Roger himself, I'd go with this information as accurate.

Just for reference, the X keel is unweighted, less than 100#, as it does not act as ballast, only provides lift. They might be shaped similar, but very different.

"Just for reference, the X keel is unweighted"
vizwhiz - The "X" in the 198X was to indicate that I did not know if his boat was a 1986 or a 1987 etc - not an X model. The MAC I would love to have would be an X though.
