Launched my H26 today, with the help of fellow HOW sailor Bob Gravenstine. Thanks Bob! One problem. The centerboard wouldn't swing down. We gave the rope some slack and after a while it was taught, so the board must have come down some. But, when I released the rope again it wouldn't go any further. Then I tried to pull it back up and it was stuck. Tried winching, but the only movement I got seemed to be the stretching of the rope. Any suggestions? Obviously my preferences would be anything that didn't involve dropping the mast. Also, the boat's in NJ, so not much chance of going underneath with a snorkel, after all it is only March. PS - Bob: Followed your advice on the CDI roller furler. Worked great. The sail is up and furled Thanks Ron Mehringer Hydro-Therapy

Perhaps

Perhaps you could catch the partially down board by dragging a line across the boat from the stern forward, and then pulling it all the way down. My concern would be it going back up. Wonder if you took the board out of the middle of the trailer temporarily and pulled the boat out of the water if you could get enough access to figure it out?

Glad to hear the CDI is working.

I know it is cold, but a diver can wear a wet suit and be able to check out your board. However, I still think your final solution will be to have the boat hauled at a local marina with a travel lift or crane where it can be raised in slings. This will involve someone on the boat to slowly release the centerboard line. You do not want to raise the boat with more than a little slace in the line. Should the board break free during the lift, it will come down with considerable force and with the posibility of major damage, not to mention the danger to anyone below. With the rig up, have you tuned the shrouds? You may find that with the added stress of the mast raised and the increased tension on the rig, the centerboard may release. Leave a little slack in the line and check in a day or two. Good luck. Bob "Gravyboat"

keel stuck or line stuck?

Ron, have you checked the line where it passes over the turning block between the deck and mast post? If the line had slack during trailoring, it may be off the block and stuck. Might be worth checking. Good luck.

How much movement of CB lines?

When I tried to back out of the slip today, the boat got hung-up on the CB. Winched the CB line some and we were able to get out. So, there must be some movement. Question: How much movement should be seen in the line to the centerboard when it goes from full up, to full down? Also, how much effort should it take to raise the board? There is no way I could do what I've done by hand. Even with the winch the strain on the line (and my arms) seemed very high. Is that normal? Thanks Ron Mehringer H26 Hydro-Therapy

That's good news.

It sounds like the board was never stuck. I believe, from what I remember from Saturday, that the center board line and its raising line need adjustment. The actual board line only moves about 8-10 inches, I believe. I can measure tomorrow and give you a call. Also as you have experienced, it takes considerable force to raise the board. I'm sure you had fun today. Good sailing to you. Bob "Gravyboat"

Check the bracket

Check the obvious first; (1) TOP UPHAUL SHEAVE located where the CB uphaul line takes the 90 degree turn down from the deck. Make sure it has not jumped the sheave and pinched it’s self-tight. Not so obvious: (1) Board may be tight in the CB-well if it was not completely cleaned of dried barnacles last season and the like. A little soaking and moving it up and down will free it!. (2) Possibly to much uphaul line slack during storage/transportation caused the slack to catch on the CB bracket or wedge between the board and the bracket (similar to the rudder set up) it’s self, thus bound in tight. GET A WETSUIT, BETTER YET, GET SOMEONE WHO LIKES TO DIVE IN COLD WATER WITH THEIR OWN WETSUIT, THEY WILL HAVE TO MANUALLY PULL THE BOARD DOWN AND PUSH IT UP WHILE YOU PLAY WITH THE UPHAUL LINE ABOVE!!! Good Luck. Let us all known what happens.. Steve
