I recently bought a 1985 23. There are 2 lines that go down the cockpit drain, through a tube to the keel where it attaches to the swing keel. When I pull one of the lines from the cockpit it barely moves and I can here the swing keel thump on the bottom of the hull. When I pull on the other... nothing - it doesn't budge.
Sooo, I swam under the boat. The keel moves freely and I can deploy it to the down position manually without effort. It has some side/side play but not scary. The 2 lines that are attached to the keel are easily pulled down the cockpit drain from the keel attachment area
. When the keel is deployed, one of the lines move about 8 inches. When cleated the keel is deployed with a maximum amount of tension, but fairly easily deflects back about 10-15 degrees then holds.
Sooo... my questions are: Is the purpose of one line to pull deploy the keel and the other to keep it in the up position? Why would the keel not deploy in the first place?
TIA.
