Question... The line, block and cable assembly is there to hold the keel in the upward position. Correct? What is holding the keel in the down position? Just the weight? Is that keel moving backward when the boat start to get some speed and the water push on that keel? What is your experience? What do you think? Should something be done to hold that keel down? Thanks

Stays Down By Weight

Eric, My 1983 is set up the same as yours. My Keel(center board) is pulled up by the rope and the weight holds it down. I do not know fore sure, but I expect it stays down when passing through the water under sail. keep in mind that there is a great side force against the side of the centerboard when under sail. I have not attempted this, but I expect that you will not be able to pull the center board up when sailing at your boats top speed due to this side force. Another way to check would be to check the tension on the rope when sailing. If the board was forced up the rope would be slack because the water is pushing the board up instead of you pulling it up. I would be interested in what you find. My boat should be back in the water in a few weeks. Mark
