Have an S model...
Just wondering if anyone has re-routed the swing-keel lift rope to somehow go to the cockpit so you can make adjustments without having to go below?

A number of people have done this. We did...

http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/macgregor2/rigging-19.html

...and really like it. Our routing is different than what others have done, but works great for us and would do it this way again if I was to re-do it. Others have hidden the routing....

and either will work. I like stuff a little more accessible and care about looks less, but do what works for you.

Here is a link to the subject on a Mac board that you still aren't on. Join in over there also...

I'm curious, how did they run the rope between the liner and the top?
I didn't see it mentioned over there. Another mod that's on my list!
If I did the mod I would prefer it to be out of sight, but with a back up plan in case the rope broke while I'm on the water. It would be good to be able to revert back to the old setup if something goes wrong.

I ran a wire through the hole in the cockpit bulkhead straight back to where the hole is drilled for the CB rope coming through the head wall. If you work through the opening above the sink, and remove the styrofoam, you make access for your hand and arm to reach up in there and pull the CB rope through and attach it to the wire with tape and then pull it through the hole in the cockpit. Just be sure when you drill that hole in the cockpit that you line it up with the open area between the bolts on the cam cleat mounted through the cabin top because you don't want that rope chafing on any bolt threads. By the way, the inside head wall where the CB rope goes has enough space to set up a 2 to 1 pulley system that makes that CB alot easier to raise.

Cool,
Thanks.

So how, or where, did you mount the turning block that the rope has to go through to turn toward the cockpit? Is it still on the head wall? On the inside, which space does the rope go through?

Hope these pictures help answer your questions. In the 1st photo, I had to pass the rope around my Finspray pump using a small cheek block. The pump base is fatter than the standard Mac pump. I mounted all my blocks on oak pads bolted through the head wall for extra strength. I gathered most of this info from other posters on this website and if you search the archives it may be of help.

Thanks BR...that last picture...the little black thing the rope goes through when it turns through the head wall...is it actually a pulley in there, or just a rope guide? Is there a pulley that mounts "thru deck" so-to-speak that would work there?

Yes there is a pulley in there and it's called a thru-deck block. The block in the second picture where the rope exits verticallly into the head area is called an upright lead block and it's mounted out of sight under the fiberglass. The other where you pointed out in the last picture where the line makes a 90 degree turn to run between the liner and the boat's deck is the thru-deck block. I used 5/16" line and that's the max these little Harken blocks will take.
Fair winds:)

I'm still designing mine but it will be different. My line will exit from the laz and cleat below the tiller. I plan to run the line under the starboard settee and aft berth. A couple of these over the top blocks will do the trick on the aft end. A couple blocks under the sink, a block and tackle to get good leverage and I think I'm most of the way there

That's another interesting thought...keep it low and routed below the aft berth... That way also, it's back by the tiller instead of on the front of the cockpit. Hmmm...

It also means drilling holes in the bottom of the laz. Creates a leak path into the cabin???
I think having the CB control right there by the tiller is cool though.

I thought about that. My plan is to fiberglass in a thin wall around the block and line. It wouldn't need to be too high. A section of PVC pipe sliced in half would make a good form

Kinda like the way Mac did the rudder tube?
They made no effort to seal the hole in the bottom, they just made a dam that comes up near the top of the laz, way over the water line.
That works!

Hopefully you guys will document this :). I kind of looked at it but gave up.

I had a hard time running wire under the aft berth and back to the laz. The whole area is sloping and gets tighter and tighter. If I ran it there I'd be tempted to run it in a small dia. PVC tube or something to keep it from chaffing on the raw fiberglass in that area.

We have the area under the starboard seat filled with the ...

... head and wiring, fuse panel and our pee containers so for us it isn't a good area to run a line.

We don't single hand, so the head of the cockpit works for us. Also we don't raise of lower it that much. I can see that if you solo and are in an area where you frequently raise or lower the board or race having the controls further back would be nice. They could also be extended further back along the cockpit coaming if the under the berth doesn't work out.

Take pictures and post them so we can see what you come up with,

If this works as planned I'll document it.
Sum, what does "50/50" on the pee containers mean? 50% margaritas ? ;)

Well you know that Ruth and I share almost everything 50/50 :) and that is to remind me not to use the whole container . ................................................................................................................................................................................................

I'm sure you all really know, but if someone doesn't I mix the antifreeze 50/50 with distilled water once I start using it. The marking is so that I remember that I have done that. It hasn't been just since I got old that I forgot what I did :cry::redface:.

Back to the centerboard control line. Are you planning on a 2:1 advantage in the line somewhere. I'd sure recommend that with the extra blocks and other friction. That is one thing that Ruth now likes, she can pull the CB up a lot easier than before down in the cabin. The down side is that you now have twice as much line out on deck or where ever once it is up.

Good luck,

2:1, or 3:1 like my backstay adjuster.

I mark my antifreeze jugs the same way. Couldn't pass up a chance for some humor.:)

Ruth got a laugh out of the...

50% margaritas
...part, but she also asked me if I had really shown people our pee containers  :naughty:. Not sure she knows about the Double Doodie bags in use pictures...
