Open seas
Roger -The C22 was really designed for protected sailing on lakes and in bays. All and all she's a sturdy little boat and I sailed the one I had a fair bit in Nantucket sound. But there are couple of things about the swing keel on the 22 that always concerned me in the open sea. First, the "locking mechanism" is a 1/4 inch bolt that rubs against the side of the keel. On mine which was an 84 that bolt was useless in holding the keel tight in anything except reasonably calm waters. In 2 foot swells under sail you could hear and worse yet feel the keel swing fore an aft. In bigger swells the sound of the thunk as it dropped down was scary.Secondly, consider the physics in the case of knockdown. You have this tiny bolt that rubs against the keel. There is no way that will stop a 700lb piece of cast iron from falling and potentially coming right through the hull into the cabin. Not exactly the position I would want to be in 20 miles out at sea.Consider that at an average speed of 5knots you are looking at least a 5 hour sail to go the 20 miles. That's an awfully big weather window for weather to come up. Good luckDave
