The wife, kids and i were just beginning to leave our marina on our 1999 H260 this weekend when the keel scraped bottom, we have scraped bottom several times over the years and being in florida sand never gave it much thought. We were in light winds and the bump only lasted a second.

After hoisting the main sail i noticed the boat not responding well and not sailing in a straight line, afterwards I thought it was due to my rudder not being kicked down fully.

When i got back to dock and cleaning up the sheets, i noticed the swing keel line being slack. I figured the line had broken possibly during the bump.

I decided to snorkel under the boat yesterday afternoon and found, to my great dismay, the swing keel and bracket entirely gone!

I cannot check the keel bolt under the dinette because a previous owner filled the entire compartment with silicon to stop a leak. I will start to dig out silicon to make the repair.

My questions are as follow:
-Would not the keel bolt have to snap plus the rope line break for the keel to drop off? I have not pulled the rope line up all the way as I have read it can be used to pull a new line through.

-I have emailed Foss Foam to make a new centerboard and they will to the tune of about $1300.

- I plan on calling Hunter marine about a new bracket. Any other thoughts on where to get/make a new one? Anyone know of any sailboat salvage yards?

The sad part is i am about to pull the boat and was planning on replacing the swing keel line at that time and any hardware that was corroded. The previous owner had also told me he had replaced the line, there fore it was never of great concern to me.

Ill keep everyone posted to my progress.

Ugh,

Larry

Larryh;

Please keep me personally informed at davecondon@mindspring.com. I am considered the godfather for this boat and would like to know what occured.

For anyone to put foam under the two plates at the compression post was way of their gord/ I suspect from yur description if the stainless steel bracket is missing, that the retaining bolt for the housing bracket was never put back in or never tightend up and worked free after a period of time.

You contacted the right people. Remember that the bracket might be a little tight going in but wiggling the centerboard while pushing up does help.

Larry was supplied with the drawings of the centerboard bracket as Hunter is not making any at this time. Also, Larry advised that he had a machine shop. The informartion was emailed to him this mornig by me.

Larry,
A couple salvage places I know of and have used are Sailorman in Ft Lauderdale and Dons Marine Salvage in Clearwater. There is supposed to be one in Ft Pierce, seen some stuff for sail in Treasure Coast craigslist.
Might also dig thru the gear classified ads here on SBO, some pretty amazing stuff shows up there.
If all else fails you could make one, I'd put a piece of steel in it instead of just foam.

any steel in the centerboard would make it difficult to raise the centerboard. That was tried once at the factory which I nixed. Been there and tried it. As for the centerboard bracket it is stainless steel.

Lost Centerboard update

The new centerboard was delivered within a week and looks great from Foss Foam in Wiilliston, Florida...it was $1300 plus $100 for shipping.

Hunter could not supply a bracket. Thanks to Crazy Dave, who sent me the blue prints for the part, I bought the stainless steel and I am having the part fabricated locally at a machine shop. The cost of the bracket will run about $600.

This still does not include having the board and bracket installed.

It seems the bracket welds broke on the top plate, as the plate bolt held tight to the hull and was still attached to the boat.
