I am looking at a catalina 22,1977 to purchase. How do you know when it is time to replace the keel pin? How do you access it? Can it be done on a trailer? Also same question for cable.Thanks.

Worn Keel Pin

Best way is to drop the keel and look at it, the cable and the cable's turning ball and the hole through the keel. Check out archives and the C22 organization internet site for how to do it. Its a fair amount of work so best to have replacement parts on hand when you do this so you don't have to do it twice. A less accurate way if boat is in the water, listen for klunking noise in keel area (especially when boat rocks and not under sail in a strong wind), which happens when pin and/or hole is loose, or maybe on a trailer if you can lift the hull a bit so you can move the keel sideways to feel slopiness, or firmness. If its a 1977 and pin hasn't been replaced recently, you probabaly should expect that you should soon. Dick

Quick test of keel pin . . .

While the boat sits on the trailer, see if you can get any movement out of the keel (up/down, sideways, etc.) up where the keel pin is located. If you get any movement, then some repair work is needed. The keel would have to be dropped by removing the hangers (4 bolts by the keel pin). See the current thread about bolt snapping. If the keel exhibits no movement, then all is fine. Regards, Ted

Both can be done on the trailer..

but, few things to consider. Is the pin worn and or the hole the pin goes into out of round. If you can get under the boat, and crawl around on the trailer, you should be able to at least feel the hole or see it. If it looks way out of round.Figure on a new pin. But then, it would be worth it, if you buy the boat, to just replace it anyways. The cable is really not that big a deal. Don't try to replace it in the water..bad bad... Remember, the keel is like well over 500 lbs. It's not unmanagable..just need to keep your hands and feets out from under it. there are some good archives on the subject here. I did remove my keel with the boat on the trailer, others raised the boat up to do so. either way, warrants caution.. enuff said.. good luck. Hope you find urself a new boat there.
