I'm purchasing a 1979 Catalina 22.This a first boat for me. The seller indicated that the swing keel cable is loose and may need re3pair/replacement. The boat is currently in the water, keel down, and I have no plans to ever trailer it. Is this something I should be concern about? Is it a necessary repair? Is it an expensive repair? Otherwise the boat appears in good shape and I am looking forward to a summer of great sailing. Any thoughts, comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

keel

cable is loose ? , which end ? a new cable from CATALINA DIRECT is about $ 37.00, a winch is about $ 90.00. should you have it? with out it as the boat rocks with the waves, the other end that is resting on the inside of the keel trunk will wear a hole in the fiberglass and you will sink. with the cable , you can lift the keel off the fiberglass. congratulations on your new boat john

C-22 keel cable

Al; Take John's words with a large grain of salt. I had a C-22 for seven years, kept it in Alamitos Bay, and for five of those years the cable was broken, pulled from the swadge. Keep the locking bolt tight to keep keel motion to a minimum, but be aware that with the keel down, you will have no keel adjustment for beating, reaching, or running downwind, and it would be very difficult to put the boat on a trailer, should you have to for maintenance. You will have to paint the bottom some time; haul out at a yard, with a crane and once on a cradle you can refit the winch/cable. Don't buy from Catalina! The winch is a common trailer winch, the cable galvanized cable, available everywhere. Here's another piece of advice; join a club with other C-22 boatowners. The Keelswingers meet in Seal Beach, CA. Look in Santana for announcements. Good luck. Larry W.

Easy to fix

Al: My keel cable broke the first season I owned my C22 and it went up on the trailer just fine, I just had to crank the trailer winch a little harder than normal. When you winch it on to the trailer the keel will ride up onto the keel support. I left the boat sit back on the trailer about 12 to 18 inches which allowed the keel to hang down just enough to attach the cable and fish it up through hull. If you have any shallow areas where you sail you will want to replace the cable, your boat draws 5' of water with the keel down and 2' with it up, that's a big difference. Besides the cables are not expensive youshould be able to fet one for under $35. Barry Broyles C22 # 1909 "Brighteyes" E-mail LTBROYT6D@cs.com
