While leaving our moored 1973 Catalina I could see through the clear water at our swing keel.I was under the impression that it would be straight up and down.It was back at a 25 degree angle. The keel cable is loose so that there is no hum.The locking bolt is secure.Just what angle is normal?

angle of the dangle (keel, that is)

all the way down is pretty much straight up and down. If your keel lock is tight, it's holding the keel part-way up up, provided, of course, that your cable is long enough to let the keep go all the way down. Dive on it and see if the forward edge of the keel meets the inside of the trunk.

At and angle . . . normal

The keel will be at an angle (not straight up and down). Not sure what the degree will be, but it may be about 20 degrees. S2's are straight up and down.

Keel illustration

Timm: This drawing says it all. You are so lucky to have that kind of water. I never use the keel locking bolt. Regards, Bob B.

Why thank you

Thank you all.The illustrations help considerably. They shoe exactly what I'm seeing.I was very surprised myself at how clear Lake Michigan was this weekend.I could see straight down more than 20 feet.
