I have a new 426 DS and it has inmast furling - could I add the swing batten main to this boat, if so how much area would I gain, is it harder to furl/reef? I sail with just my wife and I. Any idea on approximate cost for such a beast? I have seen the sail listed but don't have a good idea how it really works and any of the potential downsides to it. Please, any info appreciated. Ed

Hi Ed, Welcome to the Doyle Sailmakers Forum, and thank you for your interest in the Swing Batten Main. The Swing Batten Main, is not necessarily for everyone. It has been quite well received on boats that do some racing, making them more competetive against their standard mainsail counterparts. However, the Swing Batten Main does require attention when furling and deploying, it is not automatic. I would be happy to provide you with in depth information and pricing on The Doyle Swing Batten Main as well as our NEW ZENITH Vertical batten RF Main. Please contact me at: timstodola@doyleplochsails.com with your information, and I will send a complete package.

Ed, you do have to pull a line to rotate the battens when you reef/unreef, so it's not as simple as the normal in mast furling-but, I was going crazy coming from a traditional large roach Hunter main to the roachless in mast main on my 356-you give up a tremendous amount of power for the convenience, and to get that back I'm willing to take the extra step. the attached picture shows my new swingbatten main on the Doyle (marblehead) loft floor, with the stock sail on top. the difference in incredible! I'll post a review when we get back in the water in a few months. BTW, wher is the northeast coast?? Chuck Wayne H356 WWW.Escape

Chuck, Northeast coast

We used to sail from our Condo in Mystic CT. But sold it and bought the 426 - now have no home port, literally, the boat will be registered in RI as my son lives in Cranston, but it wil be transient all summer as we make our way around NY waters to MA area. Have people to see in Long Island, CT, RI and on the Cape so we will splash the boat in about July and sail it until about October one, then back out of the water and it gets stored and I return to GA for the winter - thus the Northeast Coast listing for our address.
