Swim platform

So I have a 1975 Jensen Cal 25 and it has an outboard 9.9 engine. Do they make dual swim platforms that go on either side of your motor? That you can bolt on, or is that strictly a custom thing I'm going to have to Jury-rig? I'm sure I'm not the only one with this issue. I want it to be easy for people to step off in the back without having to leap the rail onto the dock. I also want to be able to get the dogs on easily.

Archer, your boat selection was designed in an age where sailing was the dominate purpose and swimming was a by product of the activity. You climbed a ladder over the side.
A swim platform is now a sought after appendage. Adding one to your boat is by all means possible. You may want to consider what this will do to the sailing of your boat. The hull designer did not consider adding significant weight to the transom. Perhaps a platform that is foldable would minimize the impact on your sailing experience.

Thanks John, but I'm not really planning on racing and I don't see something jutting from the back cutting aerodynamics that much. I want my dog to have easy access mostly.

I understand.. It is not about aerodynamics.. It is about waves crashing on your stern and ripping the swim step off the stern, perhaps putting a hole in the stern in the process and creating a way for water to fill your boat. It seems to me that if you have the step fold up against the stern and have it secure against the stern when not in use by your puppy, that it will be less likely to be exposed to crashing waves.

By all means if you plan to stay in the calm waters of San Diego Bay or Mission Bay that such an issue is less likely than if you head out to the Catalina Islands.

All modifications are a decision of the owner not the sailors on the internet. All we can possibly do is provide info for you to consider.

Okay, so do you know of some type of fold-up that would work for a Cal-25, that would have fold-up steps as well? Yeah, I doubt I'll ever go to open water. The most I'd do would be coastal cruising, but I don't want to sink.

I have not found any premade ones that fold up. Usually used on power boats all appear to be fixed.

Here is a fellow that built his own. It hinges on a base he built, and holds in place by wires that support the swimstep when in the down position. Conceivably you could make the design for either or both halves of your stern.

There are others that have done this and posted on youtube.

Adding a ladder to climb up on to a platform are all premade and easy to find. You could also consider building a rope ladder. Problem with rope ladders is they tend to be difficult to use.
