Swim ladder

Hi again,

Have a Ranger 22 and I can't find a removable swim ladder with a reach big enough at the top to go across the gunwale and don't want to mount one to the stern/transom.

Any ideas?

Mount some sort of fitting on the gunwale to hold the removable ladder?

Honestly though, we did mount a folding ladder on the transom of our 19' boat, and it's been 100% win. It's even useful when the boat's on the trailer.

Wally - For the last dozen years I have been using a stern ladder extension that I made out of 1" PVC pipe. You can make the top any dimension you need to fit your boat, along with standoffs to keep it vertical. PVC is very inexpensive, easy to work with, and can be found at any hardware store. At the time my ladder cost less than $10 including primer and cement. A little solvent to remove the printing on the pipe and you have a professional looking ladder.

Leave openings at the top and bottom so it won't float.

BTW, PVC pipe makes great flag poles also, at a fraction of the cost of teak.

I have a spare TAYLOR removable folding boarding ladder that mounts to brackets just below the toerail midship on the boat. I use this type of ladder on my 1970 Morgan 33. If you are interested email me at ggerber747@aol.com for photos.

Custom transom swim ladder

The Ranger 22 has a transom with a pretty pronouned slope and that is perhaps why you don't want a ladder on it, but you might want to consider something I did with one of my boats many years ago. I had a ladder made up out of aluminum, 1" square tube, that was removable. At the top end it had outward hooks that hooked to the stern rail. It simply layed on the transom and at the bottom of the transom, the ladder hinged and went into the water. There were two feet at the bottom of the top half (just above the hinged portion) so that there was some toe room. Two feet at the top might be needed as well. These feet provided space between the ladder and the transom so you had enough to grab on with your feet. No holes to drill in the boat. No leaks to worry about. It simply removed by lifting it off the transom. You can bring your design to a machine shop and have them weld it up for you, or you can even make it out of round SS tubing, but the expense would go up.
