Hi all, Spent most of the day on the hook yesterday (it's been several years) and REALLY enjoyed it!! One problem was that I kept swinging back and forth on the hook while the wind seemed to be from a constant direction...what am I forgetting on this? Seems to be a trick to settle this out, but I don't remember. The anchor was not drifting. Thanks, Ed

This is normal

This is normal. Your boat is sailing back and forth as the wind and anchor rode forces shift slightly, upsetting your boat's equilibrium. Although I've never tried it, you can rig a small triangular riding sail at the aft end of your boom between the boom and the topping lift. This acts like the tail on a wind vane and will steady things out. Adjusting the length of your rode will sometimes minimize the movement. Most of us just get used to it.

Anchor riding sail

Hi Ed - A fun project is to order Sailrite's Anchor Riding Sail kit and sew it up. Rig it from your backstay tied forward to one side of the boat - this helps keep the boat pointed off the wind in one direction or the other. Best, Trevor

sailing at anchor

As the others have said, sailing around at anchor is the norm. You can reduce the effect a little, by locking the wheel or tiller in the center position....at least the movement will be more even. For a more stable position in rough wind and water, I will drop a second anchor. By balancing the anchor rodes between the two, it really helps.

Try a bridle

from your anchor line back to your winch. Cocks the boat off to one side and reduces sailing at anchor. Stu
