Hi Everyone,

I'm a new owner of an 86 25.5, and I have a strange issue with the 2006 Suzuki 6hp 4 stroke that came with it. Looking over the past posts on cooling, there are lots of clogged pipes, and impeller issues, but nothing on this problem.

When I start it the first time, little to no water flows from the pee hole. The engine will get pretty hot if I keep it running, but if I shut it off, wait 30 seconds, and then restart it, it flows like a racehorse.

It managed to motor for almost 20 hours from the Aberdeen Proving Ground to Solomons, MD without any issues, but it's a guarantee that the same thing will happen again today when I go to take it out. Ideas?

Thanks,

Brian

Suggestions:-
Worn impeller not self priming coupled with the depth of immersion might be marginal for water to reach the pump??
or, less likely;
Engine has sticking thermostat.

Either way I suggest rebuild of water pump and a new impeller.

Sounds like a stuck thermostat. For those small outboards used in salt water keep the pee hole clean. Salt will deposit in the hole and dry up obstructing the flow of cooling water. There is not much pressure so it does not take much to stop the flow.

I didn't realize that this engine had a thermostat. I think that a replacement of that and the impeller will be in order. Curiously enough, I took it out for a quick sail, and then engine was cooling fine from the first pull. Still, I'd hate to be stuck if it dies on me.
Thanks for your help!

Brian,

I have a suzuki 6 2007 it has a thermostat and a cut off if it gets to hot. I change the impeller for the water pump ever year I also bought a maintenance manual for Suzuki and follow the Maintenance schedule. For what ever reason I do have a strong stream of water at the start and it does seem to become less as i run it.

Godd Luck,

Scott
