Suunto 95 Compass

I have a Suunto 95 compass that is wall-mounted in the cockpit of my H26 neard the companionway. The plastic globe got cracked (hit with something) and the oil leaked out. My dealer says it would be easier and not much more expensive to just buy a new compass rather than replacing the globe and getting it refilled with oil. He says that for $150 he'll send me a new compass. I can't find any Suunto 95's in any of the catalogs I have. Does it sound like my dealer is on track with what he is advising?

Jim, I don't think Hunter ever offered the compass as an option on the 26. I believe its a dealer installed item. They were available in the Defender catalog for $97.95. My catalog is a 1998 edition, but I can't imagine they got that expensive. Mike Pajewski H26 "Loon"

Don't use just any oil

With regard to oil in a compass - don't use just any oil otherwise it can cause yellowing of the card. There is a certain kind that is used to prevent yellowing but I've forgotten what it is. Before adding oil I'd recommend checking with a compass manufacturer or an aircraft mechanic that works on single engine aircraft (the heavy iron mechanics probably never touch a compass). If the compass is old and is used for more than decoration, perhaps putting a new one in would be the better option because after a while the knife edges or needle points wear from the constant motion which then reduces the sensitivity to motion.
