Can anyone tell me the clearance of the bridges (US 40 & railroad) that cross from Peryville to Havre de Grace? I need around 53' minimum. Thanks,

You might make it at low tide with a strong north

wind. Expect less than 50 feet. I duck under that Amtrak bridge every time I go out. Sometimes with a strong north wind and low tide we lose an additional 2-3 feet of water but that is not in the forecast. They do have a measure sign on one of the bridge piers. US 40 is no problem, 80 feet but you can't get there.

The chart says 52 feet.

Just be sure that you don't go through on a high tide with a strong south wind.

You have to call Amtrak to get an opening

they want 24 hour notice. Allan R, I don't think your C-36 is going to fit.

I have been at Owen's for 9 years and have never heard of the bridge being open

I know for a fact that it is welded closed and am certain that you would need a very compelling reason to have them open that span. Amtrak trains run through about every 15 mimutes early morning and late afternoon and about every 30-45 minutes for the rest of the time. CSX also uses that bridge.

Allen R, We like to anchor down near marker #10 on the Sassafras

If we catch the tides we can make home in about 4 hours. If the tides are against us it can take five, but we tend to spare the horses. Came back last Saturday morning before the power boats got out and had a very smooth ride. We were in the slip by 11:30. When do you plan to come up?

jim is correct

you need to call amtrac. 24 hr notice and they will open it. give you a one hr window. it takes about half a doz men 15 min to open then 15 to 20 min to close again. the rails are bolted together to in sure no lateral movement of the tracks. i doubt they would be too happy to open it then do it all over again the following day. if your going to try it don't forget the extra length of your radio ant. there are markers both up and down stream on the center piers. 53' is real iffy. ps. that bridge gets opened maybe 2 times a year. usually for arvid's in hdg. once in the spring and once in the fall. s/v Que Pasa?

I just finished searching the top 100 hits for

the Amtrak bridge susquehanna river and the Amtrak bridge susquehanna river opening requirements. I think that to make this happen your company CEO should call Amtrak's CEO and they can work out the details at Bullerock. If anyone has knowledge of the proceedures and telephone numbers to make this happen I will be impressed when I see them. When Wiley Ship Building was still in business at Port Deposit and the US navy still operated Bainbridge there was reason to open the bridge on occassion. Wiley went out of business with the completion of the tunnel sections for the Fort McHenery tunnel and the damage to their operations by hurricane Agnes. But the only commercial operation north of the bridge now is the quarry and the barges pass the bridge without any problems.

Ross; I've actually watched it being opened!

quite an awsome sight. two years ago when i was leaving that trash hole across the river i had to wait an extra 3 days to get my boat in the water because the people over there were scrambling to get 4 boats in the water so they could get get them all through the bridge. seems amtrac was not going tp allow the bridge to be opened for a month due to maintance. if your really interested, call havre de grace marina and i'm sure they can give you the details. s/v que Pasa?

Thanks To All

for the information. Doesn't look promising from a regular perspective (may possibly be moving to the Perryville area). Was curious to see if keeping the boat in Perryville might be an option, but not a show stopper.

Allen R, Manny keeps his boat down at the

Log Pond condos. That and Tidewater are the only ones south of the bridge. There are also good slips in Charlestown and Northeast. There is a sign on the RR bridge that says "You must be this short to keep your boat above this point." :D

ross i thought there were two more south of the bridge!

one is the old marina just south of log pond condo's. i can't remember the name of the old marina but i thought that they just completly renovated the place with all new docks. or arn't they in bus? then there's city dock, but unless your a res of hdg i understand the waiting list is yrs long, we at one time were thinking of the new marina next door to log pond. with a 53' clearence requirement i would'nt even consider owens. as far as arvids if you draw more than 3' most of his slips your hard aground at low tide. been there done that and i only draw 3'6" with board up. its a bitch when its low tide and you can't even power your way out of your freaking slip. ps. at owens the price is right and their nice people to work with.the slips are nice, but the problem of the bridge is a killer if your over 50' s/v Que Pasa?

Penn's Beach

The old/new marina is "Penn's Beach Marina at Heron Harbor". We were looking at it, but ended up at Tidewater.

Penn's Beach is history. The whole water front is condos.

We set the bridge low to keep out the riff-raff.;D My first year at Owen's i was hard aground 3 hours after high tide. Next year I got end of pier with 7 feet at lower of low tides. Life is good.

Ross, you don't have to find the number...

call the coast guard and ask for the number. Moveable bridges are under the coast guard's jurisdiction. I am not even a bay boater but I have cruised the bay alot with friends. How the wind this year in the bay. Must be nice to have light air. It been blowing 18 to 25 everyday starting after 12 noon down the shore. That fun sailing if you like to go fast.

Hi, Manny, I used to sail the Delawere River

out of Winter Marine. We had a few days with good wind but it was mostly current sailing. Thanks you for the chart. I wanted to look it up but I only have electronic charts of the bay. You can see it is a swing bridge clearly. It is good practice to read the chart and get to know the area you sail even if you have local knowledge. I am glad you are having good wind. I hope we get a little less air. I like 10 to 15 MPH for an easy sail. Best Wishes, Jim

Heron Harbor

Condos.... bloody monoliths! I guess they're going by Heron Harbor now. The name I posted was from the slip rental agreement. We looked there about a year and half ago, during construction. Just after we bought the boat in Annapolis. Price was right, but I didn't want to deal with the construction mess. Meanwhile got a call from Tidewater. It's now our second year there. Good neighbors. We're looking forward to Saturday night also.
