I am looking at a C27 near Baltimore (Middle River) and need a survey. Does anyone have a suggested surveyor that is competent for Catalinas. Also what would be a ball park fee. The boat is out of the water at this time.

Check out SAMS

Take a look at the SAMS web site www.marinesurvey.org for a listing of the accredited surveyors in your area. My understanding is that anyone can call themselves a marine surveyor but SAMS and NAM are the professional organizations that require standards be met. You might also want to pick up a copy of Henry Mustin's book - Surveying Fiberglass Boats. I just read it and found it very helpful in understanding what to expect (and what not to expect) from a surveyor. Good luck, Jim

surveyor

I bought a catalina 27 from a Marina in Middle River 2 years ago. I used Garland Kerr as the surveyor. He did a thorough job in the survey, and in addition has helped me with upgrades and advice on the boat and on seamanship since the survey. I particularly appreciated the time he took at the survey to explain to me what he was looking for and to teach me about boat systems. He not only did a professional survey but has greatly enhanced my enjoyment of the sport.

Baltimore survey

Do you have Mr. Kerr's phone number or email address? And do you recall roughly the charge?

garland kerr contact information

His phone number is 410 444 0044 or cell 410 382 9571. My recollection was that he cahrged something in the $400-500 range but it was a while ago. He was worth every penny.

Survey

As mentioned above, follow the surveyor around with a notebook and ask lots of questions...that's why he is there. In fact, as my surveyor went around naming various parts in out of the way places, I wrote on the part with a magic marker.
