I'm looking at a boat for sale that's near Coeur d'Alene. I found a couple of surveyors in that area in a quick web search but I'm wondering if anyone here can recommend someone?

Curious what the marine surveyor schedule is? I ask that because surveyors in our area are in high demand, scheduled weeks out and charge for travel time so I generally find one within my boat purchase agreement schedule that does not charge travel time and never found a surveyor that did not know sailboats.

If at all possible, find a surveyor who specializes in or at least knows sailboats. Some so called marine surveyors can be totally out of their element when inspecting sailboats.

I think it's possible to find a surveyor who knows sailboats in CdA. But, there's not enough turnover in that area for this to be a full time job. Most likely the guys you found are doing this as a side gig. Not necessarily a bad thing, but you should definitely ask them about that. I live a bit less than 2 hours from CdA: buy my gas and maybe a burger and I'd go look it over for ya, but I'm just a guy with a couple years fiddling around on my own boats.

Hey, I really appreciate that! Right now I'm looking into the feasibility of going to look at the boat, myself. I'm in Canada so the border situation is still a bit awkward, but it looks like it might be feasible. But if that seems to be unfeasible I might take you up on your offer.

Tedd,
I've used Navigation Services Unlimited, Capt. John Finney, and was pleased with the survey. I've attached a copy so you can see what to expect. I needed my boat surveyed to get commercial insurance - I got my six-pack Captain's license and take guests for a sail on Lake Pend Oreille. John is part time, as you would expect, but owns his own 36' sailboat so knows what he's looking at.

Thanks, @brobertson , that's a huge help.

John was one of the names I found in my quick web search, but it's great to have some feedback on him. I really appreciate the copy of his report, too. If I go ahead with the survey I will definitely contact him.

Brobertson,
You might consider blanking out a portion of that survey. Anyone on the interwebs who wanted it now has your name, full address and phone number. Having said that, I'm pleasantly surprised that there is a surveyor with some credentials. Tedd, you'd be MUCH better served by talking with him. Although reading the survey it doesn't appear that he even hoisted the sails, so maybe talk with him first about sailing experience.
