Bought a 1975 Hunter 25'. Have been told by two insurance firms that an "in the water" survey is required. I'm seeking referrals in the area which is lower Potomac River - St Mary's County - specifically Avenue, Maryland. What ballpark numbers am I looking at for a survey fee? Bill s/v Chaconne

Talk to more insurers

On a boat of this age and value, I would only purchase liability coverage. Thats all I carry on my 1974 model 25. For liability only, no survey should be required. Check with other agents and brokers. Insuring this boat is not rocket science, most of the companies known for auto and homeowners insurance will take on this type of risk. If you been talking to boat insurance specialists that are geared toward much larger boats, you may be pleasantly surprised by what your cuurent auto or homeowners insurer can do for you.

Agree with above

I purchased a '77 H25 with trailer for average market price for a boat this age. Trailer probably worth more than the boat. Liability insurance is a must but if the boat sinks, so what. The insurance companies will probably pay less than what it's insured for anyway, like a used car. I'd went for liability only.

Costs in Michigan

3 years ago, I insured a 1979 25' with BOAT/US (then it was 18 years old) and they did not require a survey. We just sold that boat and the new owners have also insured with BOAT/US, and again, no survey was requested. We just recently had our new boat surveyed, and in checking around, I learned that costs here in Michigan can range from $20/foot plus travel expenses down to $7/foot plus $12 for a roll of film. For the lower cost, we received a thorough and complete Condition and Valuation survey (out of the water) which satisfied us, the financers and the insurers (again BOAT/US). One point of interest, we were told that we needed an in-water survey by the insurer, but if the boat was over 20 years old, then it would need to be hauled for a complete hull inspection. Since we were already in Winter storage, that part was easy. Good luck. John C. Goacher s/v Perennial
