I am new to sailing but know I want a Headsail furling system. I've been quoted about $850.00 for a Superfurler system which includes stuff to convert your current sails without having them cut or modified. Has anyone else used a superfurler ? I got their video ,it seems straight forth but I have never installed one before . Any Advice ?

Head-sail conversion

Hi, I can't comment on the the furling system itself but I've just gone through the process of converting my hanked on sail to a furled sail. After listening to many sail-makers and sailing buddies, there was a recurrent theme - if you can afford it, have a sail made - conversion of your existing sail will be a compromise and will never perform like a sail that has been cut with furling in mind. I had a sail made and had a luff tape sewn onto the existing sail to be used as a backup / working sail when the going gets tough. Hope this helps you make up your mind! Can it reef?

Fred, I've not seen anything on the Superfurler. Does it have a foil that goes around the headstay? There are some inexpensive dighy to small boat furlers that just have a top and bottom swivel, these can only furl the head sail all the way in or out. To be able to reduce the amount of head sail you have up you'll need one that also reefs. Also, to be able to reef you'll need to get your head sail re-cut and have a foam panels sewn in to give you the proper shape when reefed. Check out CDI or Schaefer Snapfurl from sailnet.com. I bet for less than 850 you can get a true furler/reefer with a recut head sail. Good luck, Merry Christmas Jim Covey s/v Wampeter

I have one

I bought a Superfurl two seasons ago and have been very pleased with it. It was easy to install and the machining of the parts was very high qaulity, far better than the CDI furlers I've seen. The only problem is in the changes you need to make to the sail. You have to sew slide tabs on, but unless you have a good sewing machine or strong fingers it is awfully hard. I couldn't do it and took it to a sailmaker who did it for minimum cost. Denis

CDI

I recently questioned my dealer about my CDI, thinking I may want to change brands. He said the CDI was excellent, that I wouldn't find anything better and I should keep what I have. The price is a little more than 850 though.

Superfurler Ordered !

I ordered my Superfurler yesterday for a special price of $879.00 for my Hunter 23.5. Don Blakeley is the president & person I am dealing with. This price includes all the furling line/deck kit ready to install with nothing further to buy. Their Website is WWW.SUPERFURL.COM . I'll have mine out of layaway in 60 days and hopefully it will be warm enough to install it. FAFEAGIN@AOL.COM
