What have you found to be the most effective Sunscreen to use for protecting your skin from the harmful rays of the sun? Karl

BIMINI

The best protection from the sun is to stay out of it, if possible. When a Bimini isn't practical, clothing might be but all that sorta' ruins the fun. We have used 'No Ad' sunscreen because it's cheap, comes in big bottles, is available in different protection levels, and doesn't smell 'perfumy'. The name "No Ad" is because they don't advertise like the name brands do, and pass along the savings. No matter what the brand, it needs to be re-applied occasionally too. Someone will refute this but lotions with the same SPF seem to be equal. Nothing can ruin a weekend on the water worse than a blistering sunburn! Ken S/V Wouff Hong

Bimini and bullfrog

I burn pretty easily, so I try and stay under the Bimini, but I also use Bullfrog (spf36). The nice thing about bullfrog is that it doesn't seem to sweat off as easily as other brands I have used. It was originally designed for surfers, so in and out of the water is not a problem. It does need to be reapplied, but not as often as other brands I've used. Regards. Bruce.

Agree with waterproofing

Sweat-proof and water-proof is definitely the key for success in Texas. Reapplication on a regular basis is also important. Other than that, I've tried almost every brand or type available and here's what I like and don't like: Don't Like: Oils, they get all over gelcoat and cockpit cushions, hand holds, cabinets, and shoes (which transmit it everywhere.) Gels, not as bad as oils, but don't rub into the skin very well and become "sticky" after aplication. Odors: Sheesh, they make the stuff in every (unpleasant?) odor known to mankind I think. I like something that can be identified easily and is not offensive OR completely odor-free. BananaBoat is good stuff and is cheap compared to some others. I refuse to buy anything with coconut (except for Malibu Rum, of course.) Liquids: In the event the bottle is dropped or knocked over with the lid open, a mess is sure to follow. Like: Lotion, waterproof, odorless or familiar scent, squeeze tube with lotion keeps you from getting every drop out of the tube but is the least likely to cause a mess if dropped or knocked over. Size: tube must fit into combing pocket It must be on sale when I'm ready to buy more

Bullfrog and cover up

I agree with Bruce that Bullfrog seems to work best. It seems that trying to keep cloths on only works for a while. If you use bullfrog gel, it seems to stay on better than most brands and is not greasy. I have found that most of the creams will eventually get in you eyes when sweating. So using the cheap stuff on your parts and bullfrog on your face works well. You definetly need to re-apply if you go in the water or when the perspiration is high. Also don't forget a good hat with a wide brim.

Iam fair skinned and have red hair. Coppertone Sport works with me. No odor, no grease and no sunburn.

Solumbra & SPF 45

I have very fair skin and a doctor who says "BE CAREFUL!!". I found Solumbra brand clothing (tested with the FDA to SPF 30, and considered to probably be closer to PSF 100) to be very effective. The stuff is designed for outdoors. It's a bit pricing at about $70/$80 each for shirt and pants. I use the shirt, pants and Legionaire's cap. I also use Coppertone Baby PSF 45 on my face. It burns by the end of the day and I (solar) shower as soon as I can after sailing, but my skin is the same color on Monday as it is on Friday.
