Backstay?

If your boom is long enough, and you have a backstay, try a tarp over the boom. Not very elegant, but it works. Also, there are some boom tents and umbrellas you can suspend from the main halyard and strap to the lifelines you might consider. West Marine and most local boat cover shops can fabricate a real nice bimini. My h26 has a bimini that can not be used while sailing, because of the mainsheet placement in the cockpit, but shade while motoring or mooring is better than nothing.

Bimini when sailing

We have a bimini that can be used during sailing our H26 and that may be true for yours as well. Our main sheet has a second attachment further forward and we use that attachment point to keep the bimini up when sailing. I hope that works for you as well because that helps keep us cool when underway. Then I made a simple boom tent to add additional shade whenever the sail is down. Good luck.

hot sun and shade

Last year I bought a bimini for my 240. Good money spent. My source was www.coversearch.com. This company takes the orders and then farms the orders out to shops closest to you. I made some mistakes when I ordered it. It came too high and I had to cut it down to fit under the boom. Also I had to move the mainsheet attachment point clsoer to the mast by about 9 inches. The bimini frame I trimmed an inch at a time with a tubing cutter. Trial and error. I trimmed the front 2 bows by about 3-4 inches before it all worked. The only other tool you will need if you have this problem is a pop rivet gun and some rivets. Finally got it to fit. The straps they furnished were too long and they offered to send more but I never got them. I am using bungee cords from Big Lots and attaching to the life lines. works. The supplier was concerned that the cords would break but she was thinking like a power boat. I did get the long rails so I could move the top fore and aft if needed. If you need anymore info send me an email and I will try to help.

I understand your problem

With the H22 the boom is too low to allow a tradional bimini that can be used while sailing, or at least one that would cover most of the cockpit. I took a lesson from a guy that had a 22 and he actually raised the boom and cut down the main to make more head room and allow for a bimini. Seems like a lot of customization for me, but not a bad idea.

Been there

I have a Hunter 22. When I bought the boat the dealer sold me a bimini. It was too big, it did not allow me to sail with it up. Over the years I found that I could cut down the bimini to sail with it. I had a bimini company cut down the size to 4 feet in length this moved the bimini back of the boom. I cut the bows feet down to where I had just head room in the cockpit while seated. These two things gave me clearence while sailing. The width remained the same. I put sliding tracks made for biminis on the feet to allow me to slide it back when in the up position and forward to allow me to fold it down.
