Summer dreaming

On this slow Sunday morning, I'm sitting in my recliner enjoying a nice cup of coffee and watching the snow gently falling. I'm also dreaming about getting the boat back in the water this summer, watching some youtubes about various boat repairs and upgrades. Then I looked at the local forecast for the next week:

Lovely: warm enough to make lots of ice and then cooling off again to make sure the ice sticks around. (Boo...hiss!).
I guess I'll have to fire up the snowmobile this afternoon.
Who else lives in the higher latitudes and gets to jonesing for some boat time about now? I have a couple small boat projects that I can get done while it's covered over (interior LED upgrade, some to other electrical). The problem right now is that I'm pretty comfortable, the coffee is very good (BRCC) and my motivation to go out in the cold is pretty low. :)

Here in Central NY/Lake Ontario it has been an unusually mild winter. So far we are about 50+ inches of snow behind our average (120") and warm. Last week it was 69°F and I spent several hours working on the boat. In January we had a couple of 50°+ days which found me under the cover on the boat. Even with this warm weather, the weather can be trusted until the middle of May. It is not unusual to get snow on Mother's Day.

Edit:

A more typical winter day in CNY. Taken on March 15, 2017.

It’s hard to find a weekend this time of year when there isn’t at least one boat show, some big, some small.

come on down!

Thanks Don, I’m on my way
If you look closely you can see the top of my 4wd Tundra on the other side of this snow:

That’s right outside my front door.

Don’t think we’ve had a significant snowfall since, but this winter has been particularly mild.

I’ve had the chance to do lots of overdue compounding and polishing of the topsides on warm weekends this winter. Before on starboard and after on port.

Bored sailors posting photos of snow covered decks!
How can it possibly get any worse that this ?

At least @Davidasailor26 posted a picture of his boat.

But looking at David's boat with its nice shiny bow, ever wonder why the bow becomes so dull after a few seasons ?

Don't really care ? Is winter over yet ?

When I'm in Montana in the winter, I can't think of any reason why I would be thinking about sailing! But back here in New Jersey, I'm wondering why the boat is winterized and why isn't it in my slip?!?!?!

I live on a small mountain in Wyoming and hate the winter. My hobbies are boats and motorcycles and half the year they are useless. :(

Winter sucks…wife wants to go to Hawaii for several weeks in Jan/Feb…I guess better than shoveling snow.
Popped out to the marina today to pay my slip fee for the summer…tempted to take the winter cover off, I but thought better of it…still a month before the marina opens…just tempting ol’ Mother Nature if I take the cover off :)

Heading to Big Sky in March. I hope it sticks around til then! I agree with Scott. You need a winter sport! We’re going to jumpstart the season with a trip to the BVI in May. the problem is I don’t have enough time to do all those projects before launching.

Back in 2004, we had one of our coldest snowiest winters in RI. It was so cold. How cold was it? Cold enough to freeze Narragansett Bay and more so Wickford Cove.
Now I have to admit this was not one of my smartest ideas I ever came up with. But its a testimony to never let 2 or 3 guys alone with time to think. It‘s anyone’s guess as to what they’ll do.
We saw the ice, knew it was Moon Low Tide and said lets try. At worst it was 1 foot of water to my mooring. Until the channel.

You can see our footprints we left behind. We went from the big boat in the dock to the wall. Right between my poles where I moor our boat.
Truth be told, the two of us didn’t go back. We walked through the town back to marina.
And no, I would not do it again. But it was really cool standing in the center of my mooring….. for 3 seconds.
This year, there is no winter here in RI. (Probably shouldn’t have said that, just yet)
On another tack.
In June 2014, we were relaxing at the mooring and my wife says….Do you know its been high tide all day. I said it can’t be high tide all day. She said haven’t you noticed the tide isn’t going down at all. I really hadn’t paid that much attention to it to be honest.
Later, when got home and had the news on, the headline was “Tsunami hits Wickford”.
Small as it was we were there.

While we are able.. six months at 700 ft el in Arizona, six month at 7000 ft el in Colorado. First picture from yesterday, second picture from around Christmas this year. This La Nina winter in Arizona has been colder and a little wetter than normal and the winds have tended to be calm or pretty much dangerous on the lake but some good days.

Big Sky isn't Montana, it's Hollywood North. Same goes for Bozangelas.

Those of us who grew up in Montana knew Gallatin County before the takeover. Now..I pretty much avoid that whole area.
