Suitable electric fuel pump for MD6A

I have been told that an extra electric fuel pump is advisable due to the deisel tank being so low in the keel. Anyone know of a suitable one?
Sorry for all the questions.. I am just getting geared up for putting the engine back together and I seem to have so much to learn!
Thanks again to all...

I am thinking of adding an electric fuel pump for my Beta. I was talking
with Stanley, the fellow who owns (or runs) the national Beta dealership in
North Carolina (or S.C.) and he said just to get an low flow, low pressure
fuel diesel pump from an automotive store. I haven't done it yet. So if
anyone has a specific model number that would probably be helpful. If not
I'll just go into the store with the normal dumb look on my face and hope
the "kid" behind the counter knows more than I do.

That one looks like it will do the job... I assume 1.5 - 4.00 psi is
low pressure... just a thought - if the pump is always running when
the engine is - where does all the fuel go? I guess it pumps more
than is needed by the engine? Does it re-circulate back to the tank
somehow? Also, if the mechanical pump fails will the electric pump
keep the engine running? I am assuming the mechanical pump is left as
is and the electric one is situated "upstream" near to the tank?

Thanks for the info.. its useful to get other opinions - it gives me
more confidence that I am doing the right thing!

Hi All

If you have the fuel tank in the keel it is sometimes (not always) necessary
to add an in-line fuel pump to help the mechanical pump "lift" fuel form the
keel tank when almost empty. Best one I have found for this purpose is an
American make called "Facet". 12v Low Pressure, available both here in the
Uk and obviouslly in the US.

Cheers

All diesel engines re-circulate their fuel all the time, the electric pump is just a "helping hand", A lift pump mounted close to the tank.

Keep the engine running after mechanical pump failure is hard to say, many times it is membrane failure, and then it won\'t, but you can juryrig to be able to run your engine.

John - I had an electric lift pump when I had my Volvo engine as the engine fuel pump could not lift the fuel out of the bottom third of the keel tank. When i fitted me Beta engine I fitted the electric pump that Steve has mentioned. Since then I have removed my keel tank and fitted a stainless steel tank in the Starboard cockpit locker so no lift pump is required.

The space in the keel now stores my spare anchor chain and warp. With regard to the fuel there should be a return line from the injectors to the top of the tank to remove surplus diesel.

That is exactly what I did, I went to NAPA and bought a low flow, low pressure, generic 12vdc auto diesel fuel pump for my old Westerbeke. Worked great.MSG Frank Gallardo Jr.

I'm new to this. I have an MD6A and the tank in the keel. I also have an
electric 'booster' pump which so far seems unnecessary. I don't know if
there will be times when I'll care.
