Suggestions for getting it home

Can anyone help with suggestions on how to get our dry docked Hunter 26 project home to work on it. Haven't had any luck finding a used trailer either in the VA area or around Annapolis MD. A trailer is really what we need to do what we can before taking it to the local marina for finish work.

Make something

Boat transport has gotten pretty expensive. I was quoted $500 to bring an O'day 23 (K/CB) to my home from about 1 hour's ride away. 8 years ago I had a Chrysler 26 brought from the same area by the same transporter and it cost me $150! Is the H26 a fin keel or a water ballast model? There was a couple sailboat trailers for sale on Craigslist up here in the MA/RI area a couple weeks ago if you wanted to make the trip. Your other alternative is to rent a car trailer and build a crib on it. Something built from timbers would suffice for a CB boat. I'd construct something using boat stands, maybe tack-welded together and chained to the trailer for a fin keeler.

I'd check with some marinas

in your area. Often boats are kept inthe water all summer and into the fall while their trailer sits in a field unused. I suspect someone would be more than willing to let you (maybe with a small financial incentive) borrow the trailer to get the boat home. Then put it up on blocks and returnt he trailer. Once finished with the repairs, repeat the process. I have a Hunter 235 but the trailer is too small to assist you. Good Luck Hayden

Sail Clubs

I would look to sailboat clubs/yacht clubs. They usually have something like this around especially during the summer when boats are in the water. We have the rudder club here in Jacksonville but I would image with the Chesapeake Bay close to you, there should be clubs close enough for you to drive.

he's down near Raleigh now, but used to be (still is?) the dealer at SML. Plus, he's the "godfather" of the H26. Surely he can help. Link below.

Expand your search area.

Your best bet is to find a used trailer that can be adjusted for your boat. Check in North Carolina or New York for used trailers and go pick it up.

How permanent is your trailer need?

WB or keel? I assume WB so: 1st choice if moving only once, Boat Hauler or borrowed from sailing club 2nd, if it's a useable necessity, buy new 3rd(distant), if you HAVE to save some money, have time to burn and are a capable mechanic/fabricator, modify an old one. But be honest about the value of your time. I'm on this journey myself but my need is more to eaisily trailer around, and store the boat on the hard not to temporarily move it one time. I got quotes for about $5-6 thousand to have one built to fit properly, safe/new brakes and a tongue extension. All very important for anything beyond a once or twice kind of use. To save $4k I ended up finding a compromise trailer in good shape(see the 260 trailer mod thread)and have spent every weekend for a month either working on it or searching for parts to adapt some compromise to work safely. I'll have $1500 in it(and a million hrs) and admit it hasn't been the smartest thing to trade off so much time to end up with a very nice, nearly new and well built compromise. My .02cents while I live in the reality of my choice, my time involved isn't worth the savings. I'd just choke it down and call magic-tilt and have them build a new one if you'll use it a lot. I'm nearly done so give me a couple months after the boats on it and maybe I'll be a little more positive 'cause I'd really rather be sailing than cutting/fitting/scrounging parts every $#(&!!% weekend. Whinin' complete:) Temporarily Grumpy Michael

Frustrated

Thanks for the input from everybody. My dilemna is that I would like to have a trailer to be somewhat mobile but realistically may never move it again once done with the project. I was planning to have it here at home so that my wife and I can do what work we can prior to putting into the water. It will be quite some time due to the lack of attention it has had for years. I have asked for shipping quotes though that is the last resort. I have looked all over the east coast without any success on a used one (1st choice) and even gotten pricing for a new custom built trailer. I have looked at just getting a flat trailer and putting a cradle in it. one is available in upper Ohio adapted that way. Old and almost the third cost wise of new. Just want to get it here from less than 300 miles away...frustrating to say the least especially since it is my wife's b'day present. I blew it! Thanks though and I know it will work out.

Check with Hunter or local dealers...

Being able to put your boat on a trailer to bring it home, take it to your choice of boat yards for repairs or to explore new cruising grounds is very valuable. Also, the resale value of your trailerable boat will be enhanced if it includes a trailer. Suggest contacting Hunter, Magic Tilt and local area Trailer dealers for ideas on how to get a trailer for your boat. Fair winds, Tom

Randy, As suggested, you might want to build a cradle from lumber that you can put on a flat rental trailer to get it where you need it. The specs for such a cradle can be obtained from this link: http://kobernus.com/hunter260/trailer1/dimensions.htm
