styrofoam under your cabin ?

Has anyone ever heard of placing styrofoam in their sailboat, and are their benefits ?My Hunter 23 has an upgraded 50 gal holding tank. (I think 10 gal. will be enough for my uses, so I will downgrade soon).I was told by another sailor that it might be a good idea to cut some styrofoam and place it under the cockpit in the event of a serious broach.Ideas ?Thanks

Foam may already be there

My H26 has foam between the cockpit coaming and the aft berth headliner. I found out the hard way when I tried to snake a wire from the stern compartment to a point near the forward sternrail seat mount. I was trying to connect my (rail mounted) handheld GPS to the autopilot and battery. I'm still trying to think of a way to bore a hole through it, maybe with one of those long, flexible drill bits electricians use...
