Has anyone ever heard of placing styrofoam in their sailboat, and are their benefits ? My Hunter 23 has an upgraded 50 gal holding tank. (I think 10 gal. will be enough for my uses, so I will downgrade soon). I was told by another sailor that it might be a good idea to cut some styrofoam and place it under the cockpit in the event of a serious broach. Ideas ? Thanks

Foam may already be there

My H26 has foam between the cockpit coaming and the aft berth headliner. I found out the hard way when I tried to snake a wire from the stern compartment to a point near the forward sternrail seat mount. I was trying to connect my (rail mounted) handheld GPS to the autopilot and battery. I'm still trying to think of a way to bore a hole through it, maybe with one of those long, flexible drill bits electricians use...
