I previously asked about a problem with my Garmin gpsmap 76 which is not showing any coastal map details. After talking with Garmin, it seems that while fooling around with the Garmin I deleted the blue chart map. According to the Garmin tech, what I need to do is spring for $150 for the blue chart and another $40 for a cable to hook up my Garmin to my computer. Does this sound right? (As for the title to this post - it refers to me!)

I almost did the same thing to my Chart on my Lowrance

handheld GPS. It is possible to delete the data on the chips.

How did you have it to begin with?

Didn't you buy the disc and can't you reload if you already have it?

Mine's on an SD chip (flash memory)

You can delete the chip's contents, trust me on this.

Shouldn't you write protect it?

The chips have a lock on them like the old diskettes had. Maybe you should think about locking the chip so it will not get deleted next time.

should have...

I don't know how to write protect this gps. I think to reorder it, I can either download it from Garmin or buy a cd. The problem is that this Garmin came with the boat so it was preloaded and I don't know what the previous owner did with the cd. In any case, lesson learned!

SD Card write protection

John: If you have a SD card in front of you, pick it up. With the 45 degree corner facing up in the right corner you should see that there is a switch on the left (port) side of the card. If you move the switch to the "lower" position it is locked. If you move it to the upper position, it will be unlocked (ready to write or delete). This does you little or no good at this time, but may help in the future. PS: if you use a card in your camera that is locked it will not record anything to the card.

I feel really sorry for you, we just bought a new

GPS 76Cx I read the bloomin' instructions, FIRST, before I played around with it. My wife says it was the very first time I'd ever read any instruction manual.

Just maybe...

Look up data restoration services in your local phone book. You might be able to send them the card and they may be able to pull the data back for you.

John has a Garmin with built in memory. It doesn't have the SD cards that the new 76Cx, and 76CSx have. The models previous to the new ones are the GPSMap 76, 76C, and 76CS. I'm not sure what john did to erase the charts that were installed (mine is a WM version called 76CS Plus), and I haven't run across a menu selection that would erase the charts. John that sounds correct if you got the GPS with the boat, and the PO didn't provide the Blue Chart software with associated "Unlock" codes. Also that $150 will only unlock one chart region.

is this legit?

A friend of mine sent me this web site as a possible alternative. Does somebody with some web expertise know if this might work/be legit? Thanks.

It looks like a Porn site to me.

I'm pretty sure Garmin has a lock on their chart products.

It's not ..

..a porn site. Almost all unlock codes are available on the web. Folks I know have hundreds of programs that they have access to with these unlock codes.

I have a GPS76

I found the cable to connect it to a computer at a phish site. I assembled it and saved half the price of what garmis sells the cable for. Good luck searching for the site. As for getting into the unit's memory, I was told by Garmin that the chip in the GPS76 would not hold the amount of info I wanted to download, and to upgrade to a newer unit. I was able to download charts onto my laptop and use the GPS/computer cable to connect the GPS to the computer, run it, and see where I was. They unit I have has the directions on how to do this straight from Garmin.
