The proper procedure is to use the ...

main halyard to get whomever lost the jib halyard up the mast to retrieve it. This solution is a time tested solution to your problem. Results in less than 5 minutes.

Same thing happened

on my 24 Bristol,getting up the mast was a project sooooo I get a small extention ladder and get it to the spreaders so the ladder is resting on something flat,I climb up and secure the ladder to the mast and then used the pvc pipe trick and the whole operation took about 1/2 hour BTW I had someone footing the ladder at the deck and did this early in the AM when there was no wind

Benny is right!

No big deal. Just hoist someone, anyone, up and grab it. Takes a few minutes, so what, it's very easy. We've lost halyards in the heat of racing. The foredeck(whose already in a harness) is up and down in a couple minutes while the action continues. It happens to everyone!
