The engine stop cable on my 40.5 broke. No big deal, except the cable is between and behind everything and the jacket won't come out. And, that cable isn't available anymore (the new one looks like it has a different end-mount). And, it's $78. So, I figured I'd just replace the core, altho spending $78 for a 6' piece of S/S wire and a handle makes me choke a bit. Just for fun, I stopped by an old... very old... auto parts store here. They had a universal push pull cable, six feet for seven bucks. I think I'll see if that core will work before I spend the $$$ for the marine version ;) Rick D.

Pretty funny Rick

Those evil cables. Just remember, I know the other way to shut off the engine.. er.. just run it out of gas. I havent changed that cable, but I let a friend practice docking one time. I briefed him on the use of the throttle, getting turning room, maintaining steerage, etc. Well I show back up a week later to take out some friends. Crank her up and low and behold, the throttle/shifter cable is broken. That was fun to replace. Best of luck. Oh and for planning purposes, have you ever attended the Lats and Atts weekend at Two Harbors? We did and had a blast. Actually met Bob Bitchin. Kewl. Its Oct 12-14.

Same as Cruisers' Weekend?

That's what I recall. I have it on my calendar. Have not been in a few years, but looking forward to it this one. Off to Catalina this weekend, even if I have to shut down the engine with my screwdriver! Rick D.

Try going electric

For $78 it might be cheaper to install a solonoid on the engine stop lever and running a wire to a pushbutton on the engine control panel. You could alternately put the switch anywhere you want as an emergency stop switch. You could even have more than one!

Alternative?

Who says your stop cable has to be in the cockpit where it is exposed to the elements. Buy a shorter cable and install it inside the cockpit. It will last longer and can also be used as theft prevention cutoff. Just leave your current cable buried where it lies.

Guidance on solenoid

Any chance Fred or Bill could provide some guidance on the solenoid - any specific type/brand/name that one would ask for? I can see the general setup from Fred's picture, but short of walking into an auto parts store and just asking for a solenoid...maybe you guys could help a little bit more. My wife hates (HATES!) the shut-off (its very hard to pull out regardless of various efforts) and an electric shut-off would do wonders for the marriage. Thanks. Paul

Electric shut-off

Guess I am a little more lucky in that the later models have the electric shut-off. And the day that one failed, I found the backup shutoff really fast! Rick, when you leaving for Catalina? I was going to e-mail you to see if you were going to be around on Friday. Sounds like you will be having fun in Cat Harbor.

Latts and Atts weekend

Karl, what we normally do when we sail to Catalina from San Diego, is first day to Oceanside or Long Beach. And then up abeam Hunnington so we can reach all the way to Two Harbors. We plan on leaving Tuesday the 9th and get up there on Wednesday or Thursday. Hang til Sunday and then down to Avalon until we decide to sail back. Probably Mon or Tuesday. Tis the beauty of sailing. NO HURRY. Hope we can get a group together from here this year. Cheers
