The rubber hose that connects my stuffing box with the stern tube needs replacement. I'm thinking about replacing the entire unit with a dripless (lasdrop) stuffing box. Has anyone done this. Was it succesful and how difficult was it. I'm hauling out in a couple of weeks and want to make the change.

stuffing box - dripless

I had a lasdrop put in my h31 about a year and a half ago. It dripped from day one. I just had it replaced with a PSS dripless and so far dry as a bone. Look in the archives and you will find some good info on the PSS system. Eddie Coggin S/V Blue Heron Cape Coral, Fl

PSS dripless

I have a '98 Hunter 310 and had the original stuffing box replaced last fall with a PSS dripless. I had the boatyard replace it while the boat was out for a bottom job. Seems to be working just fine. It didn't look too difficult to do if you wanted to try it yourself. Like Eddie said, check the archives for good info on the PSS. I think it is the way to go. Like the proven reliability of a stuffing box.

Have heard that them dripless when they fail you get no warning and water will come in at a significantly faster rate than a steady drip. I don't mind tightening mine up every couple of years.

PSS

I just had a PSS dripless put in over the winter. I havent had it in the water yet, but It's ready to go. The guys from PYI were at the Chicago Strictly sail show and really had a good display and were very informative. They convinced me. Everyone that I know that is using one really likes it and hasn't had any problems.

Dripless Works Fine

Had a PSS dripless for more than 7 years. Works great, no problems. Would not go back to the dripping nose system for anythings. Bilge is completely dry all year long.

GFO Gore-Tex

Has anybody had any experience with Gore-Tex in replacing the flax stuffing material? How long has it been installed? Any info would be appreciated.

Gor-tex Packing

I changed over to GFO packing two years ago in my 2000 H340. It works as advertised but I think it may compress more than standard packing. The first year with three rings in the box, I found that I had to tighten the box down significantly in order to stop any dripping. The following year I added two additional rings to the stuffing box and I am happy with the adjustment and the lack of dripping. There has been a lot of discussion on this topic and I suggest that you check the Archives.
