Dear Dave. Here is the part number that was on
my invoice for the renovation kit for the "stuffing box" that I got through Vega
Marin AB. Part number 7807 The service was prompt. I ordered it through
their e-mail address using my VISA card and all went smoothly. Since I have this
kit I shall go ahead and use it, but it might be interesting to follow up
Walther Nerving's comment re the Volvo Penta rubber stuffing box Part Number
828254. Good Luck! Iver (Tara #2490)

Hello,

I've been looking at doing a job on the stuffing box. It doesn't
currently leak, but we are planning on a big trip this year, and
don't want to have to fix it later. I've checked the archives, and
it sounds from one e-mail that we have to knock the prop shaft back.
That seems alot. Is there anyone out there who has dealt with this
and could tell us what to do, and what would be involved. We have an
MD6A with a combi prop. The stuffing box looks like a black rubber
hose, big, with a pair of hose clamps at either end. We are on the
hard for the next few weeks, so it's a good moment to do it. Thanks
for your help,

Regards,
Christine

Hi Christine

I did mine last year, and yes it is a biggish job. There are two lipseals
contained in the brass casting secured at the front of the black hose. The
shafts need to be removed to get to these seals. You really need the technical
data to carry out the job and a set of gearbox seals etc (£38 from VAGB). you
will also need a few days and a bit of patience. As the seal is not leaking I
suggest you ensure the black hose is well secured (mine came off on one
trip), grease at regular intervals and leave it at that.

Hello Christine:

if the stuffing box doesn't leak, just grease it. You should find the
grease-bolt on top of the stuffing
box. Press grease in until you see it coming out through the seal ring.
Do this at least twice a year!
(by the way, I urge you to buy 2 spare seal rings (catalog # 52802-156)
and the bushings for the
stuffing box (catalog # 49192).
Should the stuffing box start to leak, then on your next haul-out you
can change these items. (then
you have to 'knock the prop shaft back' as you call it.:)

Hello Christine;

sorry I forgot to tell you- should you ever change the bushing and seal
ring for
the stuffing box, then also get a new bushing (catalog # 47357) for the
stern
bearing. (since the shaft+ sleeve are out anyway)
I've changed these things many times- the job isn't too difficult.

Hi Dan;
I called- they no longer carry these parts. Though I've seen the e-mail
from Mr. St. Birch.... get it from him.. it's a good deal.

Dan here: Thank you for all of your input. Rebuild kit has been
ordered. Good Idea about the sump pump, yes I do have shore power.
Thanks again
