OK , time to try something new and exciting. I want to repack the stuffing box and have decided to use the dripless moldable packing from West Marine. I have reviewed all of the options and this one seems to work well for my needs. I have read some articles about how to repack but I am missing something in the process. I understand that I need to remove the cotter pin which connects the nylon "locking nut" to another nylon nut. Is this second nut the "packing nut"? Do I need to undo the two hose clamps holding the hose on to the packing nut? Any help with good detail would be most helpful. Thanks

NUTS

I think the packing is between the two plastic nuts, you will need to remove the cotter pins, and undo the nut closest to the engine, the packing should be inside that nut. You need to remove the old, and replace with the new.

I've got an H25.5 with the plastic stuffing box. Yours sounds like the same setup. Remove the cotter pin and unscrew the nut closest to the engine, then slide it back to give yourself room. The packing is inside the other nut, wrapped around the shaft. TAKE NOTE... most likely there's a plastic washer in there, which you'll have to pull out as well, before you can see the packing! I used a small mirror, two "hooks" fashioned from wire, and a bit of light tapping with a small hammer to loosen the @#$%ing washer and bring it out. If the packing's been in there a while it'll be plenty hard to dig out. Save yourself a heap of trouble and go for the pick tool(about $12.00). It works great and you'll get the packing out in no-time. Good luck, Brad
