Stuffing box Shaft packing

I own a beneteau 305 built in france , I have tried two sizes of packing for my stuffing box 3/16 is to small and 1/4 is to large) what is the correct dimension to use I beleive it must be metricPlease Help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ThanksJean

Jean, if the boat was built in France I would venture tosay it must be metric. Maybe Jose can jump in here to help His 361 was built in FranceCharlie

Upgrade to a seal?

Have you thought about replacing the stuffing box with a shaft seal? I used to own a '83 First 32 that had the stuffing box replaced with a dripless shaft seal, so its probably possible to do so on a 305.Depending on the size of the sterntube, you could probably use either the Volvo seal being talked about on another thread here, or the PSS Dripless unit. I prefer the PSS, but its mostly a personal choice I guess.Good luck!TimOC 321 Reverie
