lots of links

you can either do a simple Google search or search here on HOWS archives for stuffing box and find lots of links with diagrams and detailed instructions - usually the most difficult part on some boats is access. Don

Stuffing the box

It is easier than you think. There are different packing boxes on the market, but the idea is the same. Loosen the lockin' nut (thin nut just behind the big end nut holding the packing), und the big nut and pull it off the packing gland (in the direction towards the engine/transmission coupler). With the corkscrew (the one you use on your boat to open a nice bottle of wine) remove the old packing - most likely three separate cirkles of something that looks like waxed cord. Take the new packing out of the box and measure 2-3 or 4 separate pieces of packing line/material of the exact circumference of the prop shaft - no smaller , no bigger. Position the cut ends opposite to the other sequential layers. Now you are almost done. Slide the big nut back and tighten. Not too much, so you allow for water lubrication. Allow for about 4 drops /min. Than tighten the locking nut . Use the cork screw to open the bottle of wine as a reward and voila, you are done. Happy sailing.

Stuffing Box

I'm not sure if the 29.5 has the same white nylon stuffing box that the 28.5 came with, but if it does, you've got to somehow remove a washer that fits between the packing material and the packing nut. Getting the packing nut off is usually simple, as the nylon doesn't corrode or freeze like bronze does. Getting the washer out, prior to getting the old packing material out, is a real challenge. Some people do this by undoing the clamps on the shaft log and wiggling the whole gland forward, and then pulling it back, which may push the washer forward too. Others report getting the washer out with a small pick. Obviously, this is a job best done with the boat on the hard.
