I have a Cat. 30 and need to replace the packing. What is recommended to use? Brand, type etc. I was looking and am not sure what to use as well as size and specs needed. Where is a good place to buy and how much is needed?

Look in your manual for size. For your 1" shaft, it usually is 3/16".

Depends on the year and what type of stuffing box. My 1978 has the standard 1" shaft with a 1-1/2" shaft log and packing box. I put 1/4" GTU in it. Got two wraps to fit. My understanding is some newer boats have 1 7/8" shaft log. I don't know if this effect the packing size.
Also, due to the taper of the hull I had to use exhaust hose for the shaft log and not the proper Algonquin hose.
