I have had this boat since 2004 and not changed the shaft packing. It has a GW Morse box and the take up nut has 3/8" to go before the box. The nut is hand tight, does not drip, so assuming it has dripless packing. I have backed the nut out and looked in with a mirror and it appears OK. It does not get hot. The question is, should I repack it or assume it is good?

Thanks,

Bailey

If ...........................

....................... as you say, it doesn't get hot; and the shaft under the packing is shiny and smooth; and the packing is teflon impregnated flax or similar lubricant impregnated soft fiber; then leave it. When it gets to the point where hand tightening won't stop the leakage, it's time to repack.

If it's cool and not leaking, it's good.
