Cant imagine what a couple of wrenches big enough to fit a stuffing box would cost! And they would be unitaskers! I use a pipe wrench like steve said and a big pair of channel locks or the adjustable "wrench pliers thingys" they sell at home depot in the plumbing section. The adjustable pliers do break though if it has been a while since you adjusted the packing nut. Remember.. righty tighty lefty loosy :)

Cheers

My experience is you do need 2 of them, as above, plus a tentacle in addition to your arms. If you don't have a tentacle take some sawed off pieces of 2X4 to set one wrench against while you back off the lock nut.

Have had recommendation to use exact size pump wrenches for the packing nuts, that's why I am looking for the size...(and I will do my best not to use any wrenches on the Stuffing Box, Rick!)

Channel locks will probably chew up the nuts. I use a pipe wrench on the big nut and the one Steve gave a link for at West Marine. FYI you can get the same wrench for 5 or 6 bucks less at Home Depot.

OK thanks guys...I am all set for the trip to the boat tomorrow...I like dry bilges and I can bet this boat has not had the packing adjusted since it was commissioned 18 months ago as a demo by the dealer...
