Stuffing box leak

Had my stuffing box replaced over the winter, but recently it started to leak badly. I tightened the big brass fitting downward snug by hand, and tightened the smaller jam nut upward. That stopped the leak, but now I'm told a Yanmar 2GMF requires anywhere from 2-6 leaks per minute. To complicate matters, the brass fittings tend to come loose underway. I can tighten them by wrench to preclude all dripping, but I'm told that will burn up the shaft. Any suggestions? I've checked the Archives and haven't found quite this problem addressed. Thanks.

Adj. woes

Hello Bill I have same engine, and this is what I do. Use two pipe wrenches, hold large nut (foremost)and loosen small nut(aft). Turn large nut down by hand,'til firm. Hold large nut with one wrench, and tighten small nut up to it tightly. Start engine, put in gear, and check that you have a few drops per minute. If not keep repeating above 'til correct. The aim is to get large nut as tight as possible, without having packing gland heat up. The drips of water prevent this. It takes me several tries sometimes Good luck red

Stuffing Box Leak Solution

This past spring fitting out, I bought and used "Dripless" compound (expensive @ $55.00) in the stuffing box. Normally with Flax rings in the stuffing box you use 3 rings. With the "Dripless" compound it basically replaces the middle flax ring. The first and last Flax rings are used as 'retainer rings'. Tighteh down hand tight plus a 'little', and no more dripping. The shaft still turns by hand when shift is in neutral. It's worked fine this season. The major marine stores carry the "Dripless". Dick S/V Puffin

stuffin box leaks

I don't motor much at all and I snugged up the box just enough so it doesn't leak barely at all. I have a tupperware container with connecting hose to the bilge under it and I see some green residue in the tup pan so I know it leaks only slightly. I 've had it this was for years and when I last hauled out and prop knocked the shaft and replaced the sealing flax cord, I noticed no wear. So I wonder if these comments of 2-3 drops a minute are really necessary for modest/light motoring. Jim McCue

Stuffing Box

I installed a dripless stuffing box from PYH, best thing I ever did on my 29.5. Now I don't even worry about anymore. Just a visual inspection every now and then.

I used to do what red coles does until I did what LDV did. Ditto on one of the best investment you can make. Russ Her Diamond Ring
