Stuffing box heating

I am using the origional style style stuffing box (bushing and two oil
seals) and find that it gets quite hot after running for an hour or
so. Have rechecked alignment and thats ok. I am using a water
resistant wheel bearing grease for lubrication. Is this heating normal
for this type of stuffing box? Colin V-703, Isis.

Hi Colin

Seen this a couple of time before. Usually caused by either the control tube
being slightly larger in diameter than it should be or the white metal
bearings are slightly too tight. If you have changed either of these parts
then that will be the answer.

What engine do you have? If it has been replaced with a new diesel then
check the diameter of the shaft. Remember it must be exactly 25mm for this
type of stuffing box.

One Vega in the UK made a copper collar to go round and fed this with
sea-water to cool it and this has worked. Whatever the cause it should bed
in after a while and either wera the control tube or the white metal
bearings (or both) so dont worry too much.

Hi Colins;
if you're in the USA and if you have a new propeller shaft,
you might have a 1 inch shaft (25.4 mm) and that diameter
is too large for the stuffing box!
